Multi-Dish Hub or Mount for Condo Roof |
|
|
I am going to be purchasing a gut-rehab condo in a low-rise building.
Satellite dishes are allowed but the developer doesn't know much about
the difference between wiring for land-based cable and satellite-based
systems (i.e. he hasn't considered where dishes will go or how wires
will get to the roof).
Does anyone have reference to any rooftop structures that you can
purchase or build yourself that provide a hub/mount for multiple
satellite dishes?
The developer is replacing the roof and it would seem to make sense
that creating a central place for multiple dishes would allow for easy
cabling and less risk for future roof damage.
Any ideas out there? |

Get the conduit run when you can, worry about the dish later. Look at
commercial dish installers for mounts, and maybe commercial grade
dishes and LNBs. |

Find a good MDU installer and get him involved as early as
possible. You can install communal dishes that can serve the
entire building so each unit doesn't have to add to the roof clutter.
Subscriptions can be on a per unit basis, and the HOA can just
pay for the communal equipment. The cable, the connectors,
and the installation techniques are much more critical for satellite
signals, and more critical for MDU than for single-family residences -
all due to the higher frequencies, which can get up to just over 2GHz
in the case of signal stacking (which is used much more commonly
in MDU installations than in single-family).
Find an installer who uses at least RG6 shielded cable (we used
RG11 for the run from the dish to the stacker/amp), compression
fit connectors (e.g. Snap-N-Seal, Digicon, Sterling), and who does
NOT use staples to attach the cable to walls, who does NOT dimple
the cable with zip-ties, and who observes the Minimum Bend Radius
Rule for RG6 (no bend radius less than 2.5 inches - the curvature of
a CD).
