DVD recorders - why no digital audio? |
|
|
As far as I know, there is no standalone DVD recorder that has optical
or coaxial digital audio inputs. Is this a technical issue, or is
there some legal issue that prevents the recording of digital sound? |

Look at the RCA DVD DRC8040N. Steve in another current thread about
time lag has it hooked up with digital audio passing through it.

That's me. :)
Sorry for the misunderstanding - there's no digital audio in, only
out. |

Manufacturers won't put them in because they know the RIAA/MPAA will
sue their asses.

I doubt that there would be much of a 'mass market' for such equipment - |
most of us ordinary people are not into recording quality audio only, nor do
we have the mics, cables and.mixers to make it work
There is lots of hi tech audio only recording equipment available, which
would be much more suitable. The home dvd recorder just was not designed
with that in mind.

Not sure I understand - why wouldn't people want DD sound on a program
recorded from a cable or satellite box? |

Sure, I get plenty of DD programming from Dish satellite. What I
don't understand is why there wouldn't be a mass market of folks who
want to record DD sound on their DVD recorders. |

There could licensing issues with Dolby Labs or there could technical
or cost issues. |
