http://maps.google.com/

Has anyone come up with a way to integrate this with GPS? Would there be
some nice enhancement to the website that would make it more usable for GPS
owners, such as exporting waypoints in some common format?

Submit any requests that you have. Google products are pretty flexible as
long as they are in beta. I requested that GPS be visible on screen. Cut
and paste would work into a spreadsheet or text editor.

Google also now has a local google search, where you can put in an
address and find searches near that address with maps. This would also
be nice to integrate with a GPS. If the GPS is connected to the
Internet one should be able to send the current location to Google, do
a search and get the location of the search results downloaded as
waypoints to the GPS.

That exists. At local.google.com in the where box, you can put a "city,
state", "zip" or "lat, long" like 38.8,-122.5

maps.google.com accepts the lat, long, but not with other search terms.

I'd like to see waypoints in Lat/Lon form from the driving directions, but
I'm wondering if there's a preferred format they should output in? Is there
an industry standard for GPS? Should they just output some XML and depend
on 3rd parties to massage it into something product-specific? Knowing this
I can better frame my suggestion.

The closest thing to an industry stadard for GPS waypoint / routes /
tracks is GPX: the GPS Exchange Format (
http://www.topografix.com/gpx.asp ).
It is XML based.
It is fairly new, and not yet supported by some of the popular GPS
software, but it can be easily converted to most common formats using
GPSBabel ( http://gpsbabel.sourceforge.net/ ).

Kenneth,

There is no industry standard, but some of us got together right here on
this newsgroup a few years ago and agreed to create the GPS Exchange (.gpx)
format, which is simple yet can be used to expressively describe a trip log
or plan.

Nice. Check out the links in the comments at the bottom. One is an analysis
of the Google Maps implementation as an XML web app. Another is to
geosnapper, some kind of GPS-tagged photo storage system.
