Hearing continued in tire-slashing case
Five charged with vandalizing GOP's vehicles
The Associated Press
MILWAUKEE - A security guard testified Tuesday he could not identify two men he spotted near a Republican campaign office hours before more than two dozen vehicles were found vandalized.
The testimony came at a preliminary hearing for five Democratic campaign workers who face criminal charges of slashing or stabbing 40 tires on vans the GOP planned to use to deliver poll watchers and voters on Election Day.
The five facing a felony charge of criminal damage to property include So-wande Omokunde, son of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Milwaukee, and Michael Pratt, the son of former Milwaukee acting mayor Marvin Pratt.
Cedric Peoples, owner of Milwaukee Patrol and Public Safety, testified he was patrolling the GOP office and adjacent parking lot when he spotted two suspicious vans near the property between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Nov. 2.
Peoples said he watched one black male get out the van and into the other, then exit the vehicle and eventually walk to a bus stop where he was picked up by a white car. He could not identify the man.
After jotting down the car's license plate number, he returned to the parking lot where he saw a white male leaving the scene, pulling his hood up as he left. He testified he couldn't identify the man.
Peoples said he found damage to about 10 vans.
"I observed air coming out of the tires and holes in the sides of the tires," he testified.
Court Commissioner Barry Phillips denied a defense motion to dismiss the charges based on a flawed criminal complaint.
Pratt's attorney, Rodney Cubbie, argued the GOP did not own the vans that were damaged, but rented them.
"The legal interest lies with the title owner," Cubbie argued.
Also charged with criminal damage to property are Lewis Caldwell, Lavelle Mohammad and Justin Howell.
Phillips adjourned the hearing until Feb. 15. |
