Please Help! Does anyone made GPSMAP76C route properly? |
|
|
While my GPSMAP76C worked great for canoeing using Canada TOPO in no routing
mode. I can not make it route with my US CityNavigator 5.0 or CitySelect
Europe 6.0
It would calculate route ok but when I try to follow it it would some times
promt me to turn sometimes not. If I get off route often it would just
disregard it completely but sometimes it would recalculate. Even in demo
mode it WOULD NOT FOLLOW ITS OWN ROUTE it would wonder in wrong direction
and then eventually recalculate.
I should add that I use it in pedestrian mode, best route, follow road,
tried snap to road both on/off but darn thing cant even follow 0.5 mile
route. I have v3.6 firmware
I just bought CitySelect 6.0 for $300 and leaving for Europe this Sunday and
the darn thing just would not work!!
Thanks

Mine works really well with very few surprises. Some mapsets do not support
auto-routing. It is important to make sure you have a mapset that DOES
support auto-routing turned on. Otherwise it will try to use the basemap
which does not have many of the smaller roads on it.
I hope this helps.

Alex,
I believe you're the victim of a few little snags that aren't
really serious.
First, when you divert from the route, the Garmin GPSMAO 76C
will not recalculate until you're at least 300 m from the
original route.
Second, the demo mode has a bug (probably among several) that
leads to the triangle going the wrong way. This typically
happens on complex crossings.
Third, when you switch the routing to pedestrian, I suspect
you're running in a mode that doesn't get much testing and
therefore is even more buggy than the rest.
In short, nothing much to worry about, apart from the fact that,
with this device, Garmin has entered a higher level of
complexity, partly quite unnecessarily, and they're struggling
with that. Let us hope that they gather their experience
quickly, but it's difficult to go back on features, even useless
ones, because whenever they would remove a feature, some users
would begin to cry loudly. (:-)

Hans-Georg,
Thank you very much for the info. Your answers on this forum are always very
informative. Today I talked with Garmin and they were able to reproduce this
problem in pedestrian mode. in car mode routing works fine but this mode is
useless for me as I need it for walking not for driving - driving routeas
are very ugly and 2-3 times longer in old cities like Rome and not really
sutable for walking.
I would not call the problem minor because the unit is prety useless in
pedestrian mode as far as active routing is concerned. I might have to set
not to prompt for turns (it does not do it consistently anyway) and just
follow the route visually
Thanks
Alex
