Hi,

I am thinking of buying one of these GPS units. As I am quite often in the
mountains I would like to have these exrta features of the Vista. But on the
other hand battery lifetime is more important than features. And it seems as
if you can't switch of the Vista's barometer/altimeter.
Has anyone some experience on using NiMHs in either of these units and could
give me an approximate timespan? I read about 28 vs. 30 h on "Joe's and
Jack's" site but couldn't tell if thats for Alkaline or NiMH.

Thanks

It uses very little power so there's not much point. The electronic
compass however is power hungry as is the display backlight.

Alkalines I'd guess. Garmin's figures are with Alkalines.

I can't give you exact figures, as I haven't taken the time to try and
measure my actual battery life. My impression however is that the 2000Mah
NiMh batteries I use last longer in the Vista C than they do in my old B/W
Legend, even though the Vista C has the barometer/Compass, and I tend to use
the backlight a fair bit in the shade. (I generally have the light auto turn
off set at 30 seconds) Unless you leave the light on constant, you can get a
full days hiking on a set of batteries with a fair bit of life left in them
when you're done. Also, you can switch the compass off, or set the speed at
which it turns itself off, but I haven't done any testing to see if it
affects battery life.

For what it's worth

I concur with Searching_UT's comments, I too find that the new Vista C is
more efficient than my old B&W Vista. Even with the larger colour screen,
faster calculation and sound, the batteries go on for longer.

I use City Navigator 6 in mine, I also own a StreetPilot 3 so it is a good
way of maximising the software. Love that autorouting on the bike
handlebars....
