Hi there!
Anyone ho nows what happends, mapsource hangs when opening a map after
installing XP servicepack 2

Which Mapsource version are you using ?
IIRC I used ver 6.3 and all is ok.

Sounds like you have something corrupted in your system. You need to start
isolating other programs loaded and possibly do a reinstall of Mapsource. I
have had no problems with 6.3 or 6.5beta on SP2....
