Hey guys, i am a Marine in the middle east currently that is also an
avid trekker, hiker. I am looking for a good gps unit that will work
well in north america but also in the middle east. I looked at garmin
and magellen but they are all WAAS which is only in America right? I
am willing to spend about 6 or 700 dollars for a unit. Please direct
me to a good unit that works well worldwide. tyia,

Talk to the Sales guy in CSI Wireless and I think you can find yours.
http://www.csi-wireless.com

The DGPSMAX, MiniMAX and Seres might be what you wanted. BEACON, OmniSTAR
and SubSea7, which are available in Middle East, are supported as well WAAS.
The accuracy is around 1 meter.

You can call Steve at 1-403-2593311 ext 270 for details.

The european EGNOS system will work if you enable WAAS on your unit,
provided it has coverage in the middle east.

The Garmin, Magellan, and AFAIK all other current GPS receivers
support WAAS to improve the accuracy over that available from
the basic GPS system, but they will also work well worldwide. The
accuracy in areas without WAAS is about 5m with good reception
vs. about 2m when you have WAAS or another form of DGPS corrections.

For most applications it makes little difference since many areas
don't have maps with such high accuracy anyway. If you want to have
detailed maps loaded on the receiver then I'd suggest first looking
for good maps and seeing which receivers are compatible. For Garmin
models there's this source of Iraq maps for example:
http://www.gmap.com.mx/ir/t2.htm
The 60c/cs and 76c/cs Garmins have very nice high-resolution color
screens, good battery life, and provisions for external antennas
that can be very useful if you want to use it inside a vehicle that
blocks much of the sky (especially some that have metallic coatings
on the windshield).

If Garmin, check which mapping is included - it tends to be City
Navigator/Select Europe rather than North America that is supplied by Middle
East stockists.

You can turn WAAS off on all units which will still give you 5-10
meter accuracy. I would not use it as a factor in my buying decision.

Some units that you may wish to look at;
Garmin GPSmap 60C
Garmin GPSmap 76C
Magellan Meridian color

Cheers,
