Postcodes are not really a problem. You input the first 5 characters
and it then asks for a street. It knows what streets are in the
specified area, and offers a choice after the first few letters have
been typed. Then, to fix an actual point, it asks you for house
number or for an intersection with another street. [If you just want
the street, make up a number - although it does seem to know what
numbers are valid!]
As matter of interest, do you need to enter a street or number or can
you leave the entry blank?

You can't leave it blank, because it is prompting for input and won't
complete the transaction unless you give it some. You can, however, enter
the name of a town in the Street field, and it will navigate to the centre
of the town. This feature is ok for small towns, but less useful in cities!

If you leave those fields blank, you will be set to the center of town.
If you only fill the street name, then you will 'land' an the middle of
the street.

Don't know about GO, but in TomTom3 that is certainly not the case. When it
prompts you for the street name just press the OK button at the bottom of
the keyboard, or press enter and it will go away and calculate the route to
the centre of the town, no need to reinput the name of the town. I use it
all the time. |

You will need to use a street name but you will be offered all the names
available so you won't need either to enter one or even to know any of
them ahead of time.
For the place on the street you can use "anywhere" or a house number or an
intersection with another street or view the street on the internal map
and then choose your destination by pointing to the wanted place, making
that point a Favourite and then navigating to that new Favourite.
The system is really quite flexible and offers a range of access methods
and I very much doubt you will fail to find one which works well for you.

Well, GO ain't like that!
When it prompts for a street, you get a selection of road numbers and street
names, plus an alphabetic keyboard, plus {backspace}, 123 (to switch to
numeric keyboard) and BACK. There's no 'OK' or 'Enter' - even if you switch
to the numeric keyboard.
Until you either select one of the roads/streets offered, or type in the
street name, it won't budge!
