Quoted in todays paper is the head of Foxtel wanting to get the goverment to
crack down on pay tv pirates who he estimates are 10 to 15 per cent of
viewers.

I ask you since they changed to the red card in late '03 and rolled out
Digital Foxtel (c) what pirates? They all disappeared right?

They're probably laying the foundations for a new price hike.

Maybe they've caught wind of folk cracking the red card.

If foxtel says that 15% of viewers are watching pirated services, what more
proof do you need?
Foxtel is always right aren't they? ;-p

Perhaps they obtain their facts by believing what people like Georrge W.
Frost post in this Newsgroup. Since he has stated that he has 6 boxes
running a pirated service, that may indeed be a good indicator of how many
subscribers foxtel actually has left.....about 40.

Re comments made about Foxtels new IQ box.
I was under the impression, gained from this site, that you can't achieve
material from the hard drive. That lets me out!!
I've been informed by a 'Jason' at Foxtel that except for "Box Office and
the Adult Channel" all channels can be achieved onto DVD or whatever.
Will get the unit and if it don't do what he said it goes back!!

No need for proofs. They're doing the same thing that they were doing in
Italy last year with Murdoch's owned Sky Italia.
When Murdoch acquired TelePiu and Stream and turned them into Sky Italia he
immediately adopted NDS. Many subscribers (70% at least) owned their own
equipment and they could not give a toss about the "new interactive
services" (sounds familiar?). very few new subs and most were the basic
package.
Piracy had already been solved with the introduction of Seca2(telepiu) and
Irdeto2(stream) and he could not use it as an excuse to force all subscriber
to adopt a crappy decoder that only let you watch Sky and does not work with
dual feeds. Magically a very selective"crack" for SECA2 appeared. It only
cracked few SKY channels and did not work on other SECA2 encryptions. (only
months later Spain's Taquilla was cracked and only when PPV Soccer wasn't
on) Murdoch then declared that something had to be done and predicted the
closure of Seca 2 due to rampant piracy. In June 2005 Sky will only use
NDS.
Same will happen here with Irdeto by the end of the year. Why pay for other
encryptions when you already own one.

You are SOooo SPOT ON mate!!

A monopoly in more ways than one could imagine!!
I still tho are unsure of where Austar are to go?
If IR2 is compromised, or CS becomes rampant, can they afford to go NDS, ie
swap out their client base boxes, (and some old crap out there I hear!) for
NDS boxes?
Would Foxtel just drop Austar on its arse?

Without pirates, who can they blame for non-projected profit expectations
Perhaps George, is selling franchises to off-set his costs.

definitely. I am not sure how widespread card sharing is in the bush but I
can't see them lasting very long unless they join foxtel.

They probabl;y decided that as they had a 10-15% increase in the number of

people subscribing that all of them were pirates. Not very scientific.

getting on here, let alone card sharing.Welcome to the bush.
