The Cake, the Bible, and the Ayatollah

During Iran-Contra, the Reagan Administration tried to buddy up to Ayatollah Khomeini claiming common ground on the basis of religious belief. This overture was rejected, but ultimately the US did sell weapons to this despot -- even though up till then we had mostly been supporting his enemy, Saddam Hussein. (The whole cake episode was worthy of the Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges, but Oliver North, one of the main players, remains to this day a hero to members of the hard right.)

"Reagan attempted to convince the public that his administration was not dealing with Khomeini but with "moderate elements" within the country. Reagan sent both McFarlane and North on a goodwill trip to Teheran to meet with Khomeini and to present him with an autographed Bible and a cake in the shape of a Bible." [Editors note: Was the Bible autographed by the Father, the Son, or the Holy Ghost?]
