Another criminal caught by GPS |
|

Here's another story about someone getting caught with GPS - though - this
time - it was added to the bag of money being stolen from a bank.
CINCINNATI -- Police say modern technology foiled an old-fashioned bank
robbery. http://www.local6.com/news/4458202/detail.html

Doen't explain how though. Sounds more like it could have been a |
standalone version of the tracker device you can fit to your car.

It was a GPS enabled tracing device thrown in with the money stolen from the
bank.

They may not catch the robber "red handed" like with the dye packets, |
but this likely simplifies the pursuit.

Yes Gary - they caught the robbers in 45 minutes after the bank robbery, |
without a car chase. In some ways it
is better than dye packs - this time the technology lead them to the robbers
and provided evidence of a stolen item.
I understand the culprits had money stuffed into their pockets. |

This should work as long as the criminals keep the money bag on the
dashboard. I would expect that the device costs more than the money
they get in a robbery. Then again, maybe the robbers were given
more money to make it worthwhile.

Stop and think ;)
If money recovered, is tracking device not also recovered?
Tracking device can then be reused.
Exploding dye bags are one use only ;) |

On the other hand, the exploding dye packs can prove very
entertaining ... there was one here in the Seattle area a few
years ago where they guy had given a lot of thought to the
process - rob the bank at rush hour at the top of a big hill and
escape on bicycle so no one could follow him in traffic. Held
up the bank, stuffed the money in his shorts and rode off down
hill away from the cops ... Oh, did I forget to mention the money
had an exploding dye pack !!! Apparently, he was not too badly
injured -- would have been great to catch on video though .

And the money they explode all over is likely useful only for
documenting the serial numbers to be replaced. |

A lot of bank robbers get away. That is why the bank does not give
away a lot of money to walk up bank robbers. The skilled robbers
holdup the bank before they open to customers. When that happens,
they do not reveal how much money was taken.
