Any news on T7/IA7 satellite outage |
|
|
Does anyone have news on what exactly happened to the T7/IA7
satellite?
This morning I found my starband system completely down (power and pc
lights only) and now on the starband.net homepage I see:
---------------------------
Outage On Clusters 002, 050 and 189:
On Sunday morning, we lost communication with the IA7 satellite and it
cannot be repaired. All customers with Tech IDs begining with 002, 050
and 189 are affected. To restore service we are working with our
satellite providers to move customers to a different satellite and we
are working to provide our customers with temporary dial-up service.
We will update you as information becomes available.
---------------------------
Am I reading this correctly that the entire IA7 satellite is offline
for good? Or only Starband's clusters on it?
Has anyone gotten an ETA for getting their starband systems back
online on a new satellite (assuming that all clusters are permanently
down on the T7/IA7 satellite)?
(it doesn't help anything that with your starband system down, you
have no access to starband.general or discussion.starband.net so no
way to get information on the status of the problem or eta for a
fix... my phone battery went dead waiting to speak to tech support :( |

According to a reliable source on www.starbandusers.com, they will be moving
a new satellite into position ASAP

Thanks very much for the link. At least bad news--even very bad
news--is better than no news at all. I wonder how starband will be
able to deal with this. Can they get as good a deal or even a better
deal on transponder space on a new satellite? Or is it time to switch
to direcway if I want anything other than dialup in the month of
December? |

That could be a good thing, but I wonder if ASAP is days, weeks, or
months? |

Well, I doubt if they even launch a Sat tomorrow, they could have it on-line
for months. They moved us all off GE-4 so that is an option. But knowing
Starbands past support record, I'm ordering another phone line and getting
ready to do dial up for a long time. I doubt we will have any resolution for
quite a while. Actualy, with Starband in financial trouble already, this
might be when they just throw in the towel. I doubt all the Starband
installers will come out for free to reposition all the dish's. That and it
depends on where they launch the new sat. I read that they were going to
put it at 89 degrees. If that's the case, I'm out, as I can't see in that
direction because of the trees. So I guess we will see. But I don't expect
anything good to come out of this. DriectPC isn't an option, as I'm not
going to spend the big bucks again for the same sort of thing as Starband.
That and they have a FAP that can get sticky.
I guess we will see how things go.

Actally they didnt move all off GE-4 . You werent moved unless your dish
was repointed. I was moved to a different cluster on GE-4 not off it.
And Starband is not in finacial trouble anymore. They have emerge from
bankriptcy like a year ago. So this is not Starbands fault seeings how they
did not own the bird. Just be patient and it will work out...if not move
on.

Ah, so your on GE-4.. So this don't affect you. Do you haven any idea how
many people are out of service? Yup, I realize this isn't StarBands fault.
Or actually anyone else. But it's going to take a long time to get everyone
repointed to the new bird and depending on it's location, it might not be
possible for us to see. Anyway, I understand things happen. I just wish
Starband would come out with a statement as to where we stand and a time
frame.

Yes.
The dearth of information of Starband is a
textbook case of how NOT to handle a business
emergency.
The longer they maintain relative radio silence,
the greater the damage to their business.
We all understand that shmootz happens. But we
don't like to hear next to nothing from SB.
Problem for SB is that there's no great easy
fix.
