Latest rumors, plus alternate to Starband |
|
|
Still haven't heard anything from Starband, other than the recorded
announcement. Tried calling, gave up after 1 hour on hold. Latest rumor
talking to some folks who have talked to Starband installers (any out
there?) is that they are moving people off the IA-7 back to the AM4.
Problems: AM4 is overloaded to begin with, Starband was trying to put people
on IA-7. Possibility exists performance may suffer. Also Starband is
allegedly telling dealers they have to repoint the dishes for free and the
dealers are the ones responsible for calling the customers to set it up, so,
you can see where this is going to go, nobody works for free. Am hearing
from same sources that some people who on cluster 50 who were already
pointed at the AM4 (don't know if thats true) are back up.
As an alternative, am looking hard at commercial grade vsat internet, here
is a link to one provider:
http://www.vsat-systems.com/satellite-internet-service/index.html
Pricing is not that bad, 128up/384dn with 1 gig max per month is $149,
256/768 with 1.5 gig per month is $209. If you want unlimited, it gets
expensive, 128up/512 down unlimited is $209 a month.
Equipment is $3500 with 2-3 week wait on install, install is $500. Thats
also a true 128k up, with slightly lower latencies, still around 500 due to
physics, but less than the 750-950 I used to see.
If I don't hear something definite from starband by the end of the week, my
checkbook is coming out. |

Re: Latest UPDATE, plus alternate to Starband |

Hope this is good news, from starband.net
Intelsat has been able to recover a large segment of the IA-7 satellite. As
of 2:00 p.m, we are testing Cluster 050 and customers may have their service
restored as soon as this afternoon. Please keep in mind that service may be
intermittent until testing is complete.
If testing goes as expected, customers on Clusters 002 and 189 will be able
to start restoring service as early as 12:00 p.m. ET on Friday 12/03/04.
These customers will be required to download a small file and reprogram
their modem; however, they will not be required to move or re-point their
StarBand antenna.
Further instructions will be sent to your StarBand e-mail address and posted
on this announcement.
We sincerely regret this inconvenience and thank you for your patience. |

yeah, right, Starband regrets nothing...as long as they
