Just wondering does anybody know if the foxtel smart card can be used
in both a cable stb and a satellite one. The reason I ask is that the
foxtel won't give me a connection because I live in a MDU, my sister
has recently moved into a house with foxtel cable already installed. If
I ask her to connect to foxtel, take her stb from her pay her the money
to pass it on to foxtel. Then install a satellite on the roof of my
flat and plug her box into to it would it work? Or are the scrambling
systems completely diffirent?

Foxtel NDS cable cards work in NDS satellite boxes. Believe it or not.

I think you've all missed a very important point in his question.

The way I read it is, he want's his sister to get Foxtel CABLE, as he says
the house she moved into already has the CABLE connected, he then wants to
take her CABLE stb to his house & plug it into a SATELLITE dish he is going
to install on his roof. Whether the smart card will work between cable &
satellite doesn't really matter, because the tuners are different between
cable & satellite (like AM & FM radio), so the cable box won't work on
satellite & a satellite box won't work on cable.

Okay lets say I can get my hands on a satellite box, would I be able to
take the card from the cable box and put it into the satellite stb
would that work?

If so would I need a specific foxtel stb or would anyone with a irdeto
smart card slot. There some foxtel satellite stbs up for auction on
ebay (DSD 700) would these work or are these now obsolete?

And thanks for the information everybody, I'm quite naive as to the
techinical side of the foxtel system (I'm sure thats become painfully
obvious by now)
