Thank god the engineers from Loral and Intelsat were able to restore service
on IA-7. It was hard to imagine losing a multi-million dollar Satellite that
was only 5 years into its projected lifespan of 10-12 years.

As for those who have e-mailed StarBand dealers and customers attempting to
lure us into their fold; Shame on you for attempting to capitalize on this
unfortunate event. Skycasters has shown each and every one of us how low one
will stoop. As a professional 'level 3' installer of VSAT equipment one
things for certain; I'll never again consider contracting for or, using
Skycaster/DirecWay products.

Same thoughts here. Also their sales dept. sounds good, but make sure if
anyone ever considers them that you call their tech support first and try a
test question on them. When I called I was horrified that not only did the
tech support person not know the details about fap on their plans (when
sales had told me to direct my question to their tech dept.) but more,
Skycasters tech support said they didn't know anything about FAP, how it
works, etc... at all. Then the Skycasters tech support agent said "let me
ask the people around me" and after a minute "nope, no one here knows
anything about it." That seems like it would be a basic question that
people would ask since FAP is a way of life on a direcway system, and to
know nothing at all about it tells me that they're not providing much tech
support. When I called sales they led me to belive that superior tech
support provided by Skycasters as a VAR was a reason to pay the $10 extra
per month vs. going with direcway directly; it seems now like it's the
opposite way around and by going with Skycasters you would be getting zero
tech support if you ever needed it.

why should they be ashamed?

the way I look at it, they should be praised for
trying to save your ass from a horrible company
like Starband.

20kbps upload speed MAX for 9 months!
Numerous tech visits, phone calls, complaints,
and no solution... 20kbps PLUS 1 second latency.
Gee thats broadband alright.

And what happened to their ALWAYS ON theory?

Starband is a wanna-be... never will, but wanna be!

A decent dialup connection works better..AND
youre able to do MORE, like voice, and gaming.

Not to mention loads cheaper.

Gee thats broadband alright.

Who are you talking about - direcway or starband or ???

On Starband I've had 45-55 Kbps up and around 700 Kbps down for the last 4
months or so... it's nothing compared to cable or dsl or wireless, but it's
a heck of a lot better than dialup for browsing non-text sites (e.g.
galleries, photography sites, etc.) or downloading anything, and a little
faster for uploading larger files. I wouldn't give up dialup - I still use
it for ftp, ssh, and secure sites - but while starband was down and I had
only dialup, I sure did miss having the always on satellite connection.

What happened was quite rare (I think intelsat said the last satellite they
lost control of was 20 years ago!) When the last hurricane went through
Florida, lots of friends with cable connections lost their connection.
Disasters happen.

If you prefer dialup, do you get software updates sent to you on CD every
week or something?
