Is there a description anywhere of how to do this in a way that lets
you load objects like that together with regular MapSource files
so the trails get added to the MetroGuide or CitySelect/Nav street maps?

Did that and didn't find anything very useful.

The process is hard -- if you want to make your own objects. On the other
hand, you can upload 20 "tracks" of 500 points apiece (created in something
like MapTech, DeLorme or ExpertGPS) to represent roads, streams, ridgelines,
etc.

Yes, I already have lots of trails that I sometimes load as Saved
tracklogs, but they have some disadvantages compared to trails/roads
that are really part of the MapSource maps (limited to 10, only one line
type, no labels, get uploaded along with Active Log when transferring
data, etc.).
I can also create my own maps, but then I just have those and not
the MapSource street maps. What I haven't seen is a clear
description of how to add my own maps as a transparent overlay to
the MetroGuide street maps and have them loaded at the same time. |

There are instructions in those groups, and discussions of the difficulty
involved, with detailed explanations. You have to do some work, just to
find out what work you must do. That fact that you don't instantly find
detailed, step-by-step instructions should tell you something.

You can't, but what you can do it create more tracks, perhaps using
simulation mode for the roads and then merge the road data into your
map. If you merge enough data and label it you can create a passable map.

That's one of the reasons I wrote my own mapping software.
