How would you check the signal strength on an oval dish with one of those
handheld meters? There are 4 outputs on the LNB...How would you check each
satellite? Thanks.

Depends whether it's a switched outputs lnb (for separate receivers) or
quattro (fixed outputs for feeding multiswitch system).

Switched outputs will be identical, any one behaves as single lnb.

Fixed outputs will show different levels, due to differing
band/polaritiy .

But, in either case, you just line up as usual, for max signal. Doesn't
matter on which output.

(sorry, another post!).

I should probably point out I'm in UK, but lnbs are the same in any
country!

Also, a quattro type will have the polarity outputs marked: H/V, H/H,
L/V, L/H .

As you know, those are LNBF's in front of the dish which are 3 LNB's
internally connected to a multi satellite switch. If you connect the meter
directly to one of the LNBF output ports, you will see signal strength from
the DirecTV 101 w. longitude satellite. In order to switch the multi
switch to the 110 or the 119 satellite, you must use a 22khz tone injected
between the meter and the LNBF output port.
DirecTV uses all 32 transponders on DirecTV 1R/2/4S located at 101 W.
Longitude. They use transponders 28,30 and 32 on the DirecTV 6 satellite
located at 110 W. Longitude and transponders 22-32 on DirecTV 7S satellite
located at 119 W. Longitude.
The 22 khz tone switches the multiswitch to the 110 and 119 satellites
and these signals are kept separate by using different IF's (intermediate
frequency). The 101 and 119 LNB's use a 950-1450mhz IF and the 110 LNB uses
a 450-950mhz IF. This is how the signals are kept separate in the cable
coming in from the dish. When you tune a channel that is on the 110 sat,
the receiver changes its IF frequency to get that channel. Of course, there
is a data table that is downloaded into the receiver that specifies all
kinds of tuning data that the receiver must use to tune all of the DirecTV
channels.
So, in order to tune a transponder on the 110 and 119 satellites,
the receiver (using data from the downloaded table) sends a 22khz tone to
the multiswitch (it sends NO tone for the 101 satellite) and you must do
that too in order to measure the signal strength from these 2 satellites (of
course, you will see signal strength ONLY on the transponders that are used
on these two satellites--see above). On the 101 satellite you will see
signal strength on all transponders except to number 18 which is dead!
Small 22khz tone generators are available from a number of sources. Since I
am a DirecTV dealer, I can buy them from several wholesale distributors.
You might want to check with SKYVISION (800-500-9275) to see if they have
them.
Hope I have helped.

Sorry, Bob A, my mistake, but you said "the lnb" ! It wasn't quite
clear that you meant direc multi-satellite. Many single 4-output lnbs
(for appartment blocks) also use oval dishes.
