Although the newsgroup may have light traffic, for those of us wanting to
get started and struggling to sell the idea to the wife, you all are "living
the dream" I've wanted to get some free/discount gear for awhile now but
haven't found anything just yet. On that note, anyone want to donate a free
lnb or whatnot? |

You may want to have a look at this website... it's a great online |
Big Dish information source. Many of the "pro's" from this newsgroup
hang out there also. Many different catagories, such as "Swap and Shop",
"4dtv" and so on. >

try to find a sports bar that has converted to the pizza dish, a lot of
them have the c band stuff sitting there waiting to be taken. just offer
to do the job for free.
advertise on the local newsgroup that you will remove a c-band system for
free, maybe a house hold will want to have it removed. or knock on some
doors.
i have taken down 4-6 dishes this way. if you are in ottawa i have some
that i am taking in for scrap cash soon. email me for one.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in Oklahoma, so Ottawa is a bit far for me.

Just drive around looking for dishes pointed at the ground, trees, or way
off the arc, these you know for sure aren't being used. Someone that has a
mini dish might not be using their big one any more, but not an assumption
you can always make. I know my short 5 mile drive to work (in OK) I drive
past about 2-3 I think are not in use.
If you need some new parts, this place is usually the cheapest I've seen:

Or wait 'till twister season and see what blows into your yard :)

.....and if you knock on the door of someone with a mini-dish, and they
are still using their C-band dish, chances are they are a real C-band
fanatic and might be able to help you.
On the other hand, I recently tried to take an old Chaparel receiver
from a customer who hadn't used it in many years (for the spare VCRS
module ;-) He insisted that he needed the receiver in case he sold
the house !!

FYI, many usenet groups have lost readers over the past five plus
years; they have gone to various forums, which are many now.
Some usenet groups are still going strong, but overall, the user
trendline is going down.
Years ago, there were quite a number of professionals posting, but
most of these people have scattered to forums/etc. |
