Nope. The most significant part of the
receiver is the MPEG decoder chip. More
specifically, the licensing fee for the
software contained in said chip. Still
about $75 by itself.
I don't know where and when you read that, but US "$75" for a licensing
fee (or did you mean the whole chip?, either way...) sounds like old
information.
A long, long time ago (about a year ago...), I read that DVD players
had licensing fees totalling about US$35 per player. But now that DVD
players sell retail for as little as US$25, I'm prepared to believe
that perhaps the licesing fees for DVD players have been dramatically
reduced since then.

A lot more DVD players get sold. For all the digital TVs sold in the past 4 years,
the number of HDTV enabled ones is still quite low. Most just play DVDs. It's
improved a lot this year, but is still pretty weak.
The price of PC hdtv tuners is probably a good indicator where the pricing on
the mpeg decoder is going. They're still pretty expensive. I considered
building a PC instead of buying the hdtivo, but the math didn't work well.

But isn't the RCA a crappy receiver? I've seen several broken ones for
sale on Ebay. The Toshiba/Mitsubishi/Hughes 1st generation HDTV clones
also seem to have some problems, though if you get one that works, it
may be okay for a good while.

Even though it was the first unit, all of the offerings for the first few generations
had issues, so it stayed popular far longer than you would expect. But the prices
seemed too high to me as a buyer. If OTA is all that matters, definitely the Samsung
151 should be looked at.

I have several Dish receivers and all have an input for a
cable/antenna connection. I have never seen any directions
as to how to get the receiver to use the alternate input.
How does one tune local OTA channels? |

Only the HD (and old 5000) have tuners of some sort in them for sources
other than satellite. What models do you have? Most of them the antenna
input is only as a pass thru. |

AFAIK, the 5000 was analog only (OTA/Cable).
All other receivers the cable/Ant in is a passthrough, except the
HDTV, where there is n ATSC OTA antenna connection. |

Mine are probably not "HD" versions.
How does one use a pass-through feature? |

Yeah, that's why I listed the 5000 inside "()" and not included in "Only the
HD".

And those are not tuners and therefore don't apply. |

Basically you turn the receiver of, or hit a Sat/TV or source button,
and use your TV tuner to tune channels. |
