Garmin 76CS - Topo or Topo 24K? |
|
|
I plan on ordering the 76CS in the very near future, and would like to load topo maps on it. My
only choices are the MapSource Topo or Topo24K, correct? The 24K product only shows certain
national forests or state parks, correct? Topo shows everything, although in less detail, correct?
Thanks.

Yes. US Topo covers the entire US and comes on two CD's and consists
of 4 seperate regions in MapSource (Alaska, East, West and Hawaii).
There's three seperate 24K products (Central not available yet) and
they cover National and some State parks. BTW US Topo doesn't
autoroute at all (i.e. on a PC or GPS) but the 24K products do some
("Routable trails").
FYI you can view all Garmin's map products online. Look for the drop
down list under "MapSource Map Viewer" on this page.

The MapSource products are the only ones that can be uploaded to the 76CS, correct?
Regarding no autorouting in topo. That's fine by me. I've been reading quads and choosing my
routes when backpacking for years. I'm quite sure I could do a much better job at deciding the best
route than ANY computer.
What other topo softwares are out there that can take my track from the GPS, and show the actual
route taken on the topo software on the PC? It would be neat to print out your exact routes.

I'll add to Stuart's excellent answer. Both series are based on the
USGS topographic quads--1:100,000 for US Topo and 1:24,000 for 24K.
If you are familiar with those, you know what you will be getting.
Most of them date from the 1980s and earlier, so the trail locations
are old. Auto-routing on them may not be terribly reliable.

Not really ;-) Garmin's map data format has been hacked and many 3rd
parties make maps for Garmin (& Magellan) units. Many are "home-made"
so the quality varies from so-so to excellent.

I've never used them but you might take a look at Delorme's Topo USA
5.0
http://www.delorme.com/topousa/default.asp
or 3-D TopoQuads 2.0

Its always worked for me (FireFox 1.0 here) but I notice that Garmin's
site has been having intermittent problems lately. |

One that's free is USAPhotoMaps. Downloadable from
http://jdmcox.com and gives you the option of viewing
the USGS 1:24000 maps or aerial photos. The program
automatically gets the data from the Terraserver.
You can view your GPS waypoints, routes, and/or
tracklogs superimposed on the maps/photos.
http://home.comcast.net/~prathman/Screen09.jpg shows
an example of a portion of a hike near Berkeley, Cal.
on the aerial view and
http://home.comcast.net/~prathman/Screen10.jpg shows
the same hike on the USGS maps. |
