I just purchased a Coolsat 4000 Pro receiver and now I need to purchase
an antenna. I am only interested in receiving the FTA channels. Could
someone please tell me what is the smallest dish antenna I could put up
to receive these channels. I am located in Northern VA. Thank you.

I live in NC, and started out with a 7.5 foot dish..
I found it was way too small for part of the arc. there are a lot of
newer high powered sats up there, and with a small dish like the 7.5 or 8
foot dish, there is a lot of bleeding from adjacent sats. If you plan on
using the dish only for analog C-band reception you may get by with a 7.5,
but I upgraded to a used 10 foot kti mesh dish, and I use it to get C/KU
band analog,4dtv, and FTA-DVB stuff with little or no problems.
Save yourself the trouble of having to raise and lower two dishes, and
just get a 10footer to start with.

good luck, and welcome to the BUD Club!

I guess I should have mentioned that I am only interested in receiving
the Ku band since a large dish (due to covenant laws) are out of the
question. I am located at approx. 38.846N 77.306W. What are the
strongest satellites available to me so that I may use a smaller dish?
Would one of those 18" DSS dishes work? Thanks.

If you live in Alaska or Hawaii,a 16 foot dish is best if the EIRP map
signal is predominantly over the lower 48.Otherwise a 10 foot is
recommended everywhere else.

Opps, Sorry about that, I that the coolsat was a older C-band unit. I see
now that its a newer FTA-DVB unit.

I would think that a 18inch dish would be too small for it to recieve
most signals. I have a DVB unit, and I now use it with my Big dish, but when
I first got it, I had it hooked up to a stationary 30 inch dish. Then I
bought a Horizon to Horizon mount for about $50.00 and that worked really
well.

I think if you can try to get a 30 or 36 inch solid KU dish with the HE to
HE mount You'll be able to get at least most of the KU FTA signals up there
with that. But I warn you Most of the English FTA stuff is on C-band.

Good luck!
