According to the starband website (at
http://www.starband.com/special/mobile.asp) They have two types of internet
systems for RV's. An Auto system (dish on the roof), and a manual system
(uses a tripod).

Take High-Speed Internet Wherever You Go!

Go ahead.Travel wherever your heart desires - your StarBand mobile Internet
service will be ready to go when you get there!

The StarBand Flyer Series provides high-speed transportable Internet via
satellite that is perfect for RV owners and other on-the-go users seeking
affordable high-speed Internet access. You can choose between the StarBand
Auto-Flyer, an auto-pointing antenna system providing high-speed mobile
Internet service, and the StarBand Manual-Flyer, a transportable satellite
Internet service that can be set-up and configured by you.

Thanks to StarBand high-speed Internet service via satellite, you are no
longer constrained as to where you can get Internet access. StarBand offers
speeds up to 20X faster than dial-up, free email and web hosting space, and
access to the StarBand members-only portal. Choose between four StarBand
service options that offer varying speeds and features to meet your needs.

Affordable Transportable High-Speed Internet Via Satellite
StarBand Auto-Flyer -
High-Speed Auto-Pointing Mobile Internet Via Satellite

Has anyone used one of these? I looked at the monthly fees for a
transportable system (about 59.99 a month, 1 yr commitment), and it's less
than the price for a fixed install at home only! (fixed home is 69.99 a
month!) I'm considering the tripod one for travel at my home (heck it's
cheaper), and then being able to take it with me to use when I travel.

My concern is that starband was "vaporware" for several years, but in the
last few months, they actually started installing it. According to people on
the starband NG at least (alt satellite.starband), they have been happy with
the fixed install, just wondered if anyone had tried the mobile yet....

Peter,

I have the StarBand Manual-Flyer 484 system and I'm using at a campground in
CT. Great to have High-Speed Internet Access anywhere! The new system the
481 Residential at $59.99 a month would be great for single users. I use
the top of the line as I have it hooked to our WiFiRV Gateway which is a
Roaming Hot Spot and I have lit up this 125 site park. I share the Internet
with others for a fee $5/day.

Let me know if you need more info as I'm and authorized StarBand
Manual-Flyer dealer as well.

what is the ping rate of DirectWay 7000?

StarBand 484 Small office is around 800. I would be interested on the ping
rate of thr new DW7000. Out WiFiRV Gateway needs something less than 1000.

Does DW still inforce FAP?

Then you most likely have a clue about wireless networking, unlike the local
guy.. I have a mesh network at home (about 5 acres), and another in the RV
(so I can connect wirelessly from my notebooks no matter if I am home or on
the road)

Any reason I can't use a 481 for just myself (but wirelessly... I hate
wires). Seems like if that works, I would essentially have my own personal
"hotspot", whether at home or on the road.

How thick (and what type of roof) can I go thru. (I live in northern Idaho,
and want to put it under something that will keep snow off it.. I'm thinking
of the plastic/wood TP's people use in Alaska to keep snow off their sat TV
dishes).

Can you do any sort of install several thousand miles away, ot would I be
better off going with the local installer?

You can hook up a router to the 481 modem with no problem.

Most any type roof except tile, and no worry about snow on the unit. I only sell the StarBand Manual-Flyer system, the portable one with the tripod. If you get this type, you can install yourself and take it on the road with you in your RV. What I did is when I'm home, I install the dish on a pole that I cemented into the ground and will use that when I at home. When I'm on the road with my RV, I use the tripod...only take about 30 minutes to set up and aim.
