Hey Chris. I am most likely being redundant with this question, but to
get in the FTA Mpeg Digital crap and you have a BUD, what's the best
setup?
What is the best MPEG receiver, I know about making sure I get a
"blind scan" receiver, But do you have any suggestions brand wise?
I know that is a source of alot of debate but I can save MUCH time
going by suggestions.
Is it better to use a BUD for FTA MPEG II or use a small dish that I
have seen bundled with a reciever. What are the advantages or
disadvantages from using a BUD or a small dish? I guess that's where
I'm most confused.
I plan on using the BUD in analog mode using the receiver I got with
the system but plan on upgrading and adding a digital MPEG receiver.
BTW the BUD I got has only a C band feed. Of course I'll have to go to
Ku band.

Well, the little dish that comes bundled with the system is for Ku band
only. If you got a BUD you can also get the FTA stuff on C-Band. Your
BUD should be able to get both C and Ku band signals (provided your
feedhorn has both C and Ku LNB's and your mesh on the dish is tight for
Ku).

The downside to FTA boxes on BUD's is they don't control the servo
generally and don't move the dish. You'll need to use your analog or
4DTV receiver that you have on your BUD to move it to different
satellites and change polarity. Of course, using a single Ku minidish
will be the easiest route, but that limits you to Ku.

If your BUD doesn' tdo Ku, you can use the BUD for C-Band only and get a
smaller dish for Ku. Personally I recomend a 90cm dish for Ku (about
3feet). It's the biggest size you can inexpensively ship and has great
gain for weak signals. You can attach a small motor to most of those
dishes that can be controlled by the FTA receiver to pickup most of the
Ku birds in the sky. You can then use a simple switch to switch between
the Ku dish and your BUD for C-Band.

As for receivers to choose, I personally like the Fortec, REX and Pansat
boxes. There are many others. Many people are happy with Coolsats and
Satworks. There are 2 dealers I get most of my DVB stuff from that have
good prices and a good selection. They are: www.sadoun.com and
www.dvbhardware.com . Both are good places and offer slightly different
choices.

If you go with the small-dish route for Ku I would suggest staying away
from Fortec dishes.... lately I've been hearing a lot of bad things about
them. Seems quality control has gone down. Fortec receivers on the
other hand are great. Just the dishes seem to be of poor quality lately.
A Patriot, Winegard or Channelmaster 90cm dish would be a good choice.

Usually I recomend to people with a working BUD to just get a recevier to
start with. You can slave it onto your BUD's analog/4dtv receiver by
using a splitter or two (2 and a switch if you need C and Ku) and a DC
block to prevent the power feed from the DVB box from getting into the
analog receiver. That is the least expensive way to get your feet wet in
DVB. You can then add on as needed. Both of those websites have info
on 'slaving' your DVB receiver to a big dish somewhere I think.

Yeah, the 10 sounds good. The dent on the 12 might totally kill its
performance. The slop in the mount is probably easy to fix with some parts
from Home Depot or someplace like that.

Just take out the dented secttion. You;ll reduce gain by the area
ratio ( what's left over what was first there) , but otherewise
restore perfortmance
