Back into TVRO |
|
|
Hello all, glad to see a group into TVRO. I was a big C-band person
in the 80's and 90's, then went to Pizza Dish just due to the trees on
my property allowing me to only get 3 C-band satellites.
I moved and have a 5 acre field for a BUD system. Is there still alot
of wildfeeds on c band? I'm also looking for a 4dtv reciever. I am
going to pay for some programming even though I also have cable. What
programmers are left?
Thanks.
PS, The BUD system I plan on installing, i found down the street from
me for free. It has a ASTRA dish. I havent seen the reciever yet (the
lady has to find it in her closet) but she said they used it for approx
3 months and her husband got frustrated with it because he couldnt
figure out how to run it! |

Hello
Welcome back
There are 3 major providers, there are other providers most of which are
resellers.

Thanks for the programming info DRlev. Come to think of it I USED to be
a subscriber of them! How about "Wildfeeds" Are they still out there? I
can't wait 'till the BUD is up and running not only for TV but for a
project for the kid. He is all excited to see how we all watched
satellite tv. I hope the BUD systems will never die off but I have to
say that I am guilty of helping the "pizza pushers" only to go back! |

There are still some wild feeds, but not as many as there were 3 or 4 years
ago.

So do you think the days of the feeds are over as far as the way it
used to be? How about on KU analog? Where are all the backhauls going
MPEG 2 FTA? |

Most feeds are going digital. There are still some Ku analog feeds, but a
cheap investment in a mpeg2/dvb receiver to add onto your BUD will open up
a boatload of feeds.
Remember all those cool Ku analog 'newstruck' feeds? They're all still
there, just in digital now. Most of them are not encrypted.
If you were a newsjunkie in the past, now is even better with mpeg2/dvb.
Lots more feeds then before. (cuz it's a lot cheaper to get satellite time
now that you can buy just a 6mhz slice instead of having to book a whole or
half transponder).

Ok, that makes sence Chris. Do you need a special LNB for mpeg FTA or
just get a switch to feed the existing LNB signal to the other
reciever? I have to get "up to speed" on the newer sat technology.
Thanks... |

Most normal LNB's will work fine for mpeg2/dvb signals. The only catch
is some of those signals are really narrow band (low datarates, using
only say 3 - 12mhz of spectrum instead of your normal 20 - 30mhz like a
4dtv carrier would use). So Local Oscillator stability is important for
those types of signals.
Most people try out DVB with their stock LNB's and if they have trouble
getting narrow carrier stuff then you can upgrade. I normally tell
people to get LNB's with an LO of +/- 500khz or better (lower is better)
and to mostly ignore stuff like noise temp in favor of good LO stability.
(Ie, go for say a 17deg Cband lnb that's 500khz stable over a 15k one
that is 1mhz stable).
In any event, if you got a 4DTV and your LNB works for digitals now then
you'll be all set for most of the digital DVB stuff. If you don't have a
4DTV now, but get a good picture on analog channels, then there is a good
chance your LNB will still work well for DVB, but you may have to upgrade
at some point.

Re: Back into TVRO |

Thanks again Chris. One more question, If you were going to set up a
BUD and had the choice between a 10" ASTRA mesh with a Tri feed
support, A 10" Winegard with a butonhook support, or a big 'ol 12"
paraclipse. I do live in a high wind area so I think the winegard 10"
buttonhook is out, the 12" looks attractive but I don't know about the
mesh size for KU, the ASTRA appears to be the newest so KU probally is
designed in.
All of these are for free around my neighborhood. I'm not really
excited to move the 12" paraclipse, but if the mesh is small enough, I
should follow up on that one. I sure the LNB will have to be upgraded
since the dish appears old but in decent shape.
Any advice for picking a free BUD? Sorry for the long post. |

Bigger is always better. :) But, it could screw you on Ku if the mesh
isn't tight enough. The holes need to be smaller than 1/4" to do Ku.
Preferably 1/8" or smaller.
Winegards make good dishes, never heard of Astra. Even a buttonhook can
be rigged up to be more stable. Just use wire rope and turnbuckles to
secure it in place.
The most important thing is to make sure the dish is not warped or beat
up at all. Minor warping of the dish will cause havoc espicially on Ku
band.
(if you dont' take the 12' let me know where it is... if it's in the
Northeast I"ll snag it. hehehe)

Ok, just got a good inspection of the 12 footer, the thing is
slightly dented at the bottom, ALOT of slop in mount, feed support is
prety rusted. I'll take the black 10 foot mesh that says "ASTRA" on the
feed cover, mesh is in nice condition, mount is really tight with no
slop and actually apprears new. Maby it's a later installation? |

Yeah, the 10 sounds good. The dent on the 12 might totally kill its
performance. The slop in the mount is probably easy to fix with some parts
from Home Depot or someplace like that.

Re: Back into TVRO |

Hey Chris. I am most likely being redundant with this question, but to
get in the FTA Mpeg Digital crap and you have a BUD, what's the best
setup?
What is the best MPEG receiver, I know about making sure I get a
"blind scan" receiver, But do you have any suggestions brand wise?
I know that is a source of alot of debate but I can save MUCH time
going by suggestions.
Is it better to use a BUD for FTA MPEG II or use a small dish that I
have seen bundled with a reciever. What are the advantages or
disadvantages from using a BUD or a small dish? I guess that's where
I'm most confused.
I plan on using the BUD in analog mode using the receiver I got with
the system but plan on upgrading and adding a digital MPEG receiver.
BTW the BUD I got has only a C band feed. Of course I'll have to go to
Ku band. |
