Dish Size for Western Australia |
|
|
I will be caravanning in WA (all over WA) next year and will be taking my
Austar box and card with me, I'm paying for it therefore I want to use it.
Will I be able to pick up Austar in Western Australia and if so what size
dish do you recommend.
Thanks in Advance

Hi Hounddog, Reg puts it in a nutshell.
It may be possible to use <90 cm but you would need a lot of patience to
focus on satellite, in fact, even clouds may be enough to make it
impossible. Carrying the big dish is not simple though. I had my (2nd) spare
wheel laying in the back of the stn wagon (but it was securely bolted down
using two seat anchors). I removed the LNB support and laid the dish on the
spare with the mounting hardware inside the "deep side" of the spare. It is
obviously very different when trying to focus a dish in W.A. compared to
QLD.

I have a spare 65cm and a 90cm dish for the caravan, the 65cm dish works
great on the East coast but I'll play safe and take the 90cm dish with me to
WA.
Thanks to all for your help.

we use a 65cm dish all round Australia
I have two crews presently working in WA with 65cm dish no complaints
the 65cm dish is easier and quicker to aim/align than a larger dish.

Well, now you have two opinions that differ. Maybe you had better consider
taking both dishes and find out for yourself. However, it seems to me that
the larger dish has a greater capture area and logic must dictate that a
smaller dish and smaller capture area could not possibly make it quicker and
easier ... ... Maybe Landline could explain the technical details that will
reverse my logic? I have an open mind.

He is probable correct, A 65cm dish will work, in perfect conditions, but as
soon as it starts to rain, he will loose picture, Sure that will also happen
with a 1.2 metre, but only if it develops into a storm. .
I notice that he does not say, what brand of receiver he is using, Some
receivers will allow a picture of a tin plate, some won't except a picture
unless you spot on satellite.

Hi Bassett,
I'm confused, Landline said "the 65cm dish is easier and quicker to
aim/align than a larger dish". I agree that it is lighter and smaller to
handle - but the whole purpose must surely be to get a picture on your TV.
So if we consider the two different sized disks, and we consider the weaker
signal conditions in W.A., then surely the best chance of getting a good
picture, with the least amount of trouble, is when using the larger dish.
Enlighten me please. Allan.

You are of cause correct Alain, How anyone can say that a 65cm dish will
work as well in the west as it does in the eastern states is crazy.
As for dish alinement, of cause a bigger dish will give a better signal
responce, there for it is easer to line up.. And once the angle is set,
providing your not doing great milages every day, The angle will not
change, and it's simply a matter of turning the dish on the pole to line up
the satellite.
Frankly it's just as easy to transport a 1.2 dish , folded flat on a van
roof as a 65cm. In fact the bigger dish would be easer as the LNB arms can
be removed, where as with the smaller dish the LNB arm is part of the mount
and can't be removed.

Re: Dish Size for Western Australia |

Thanks Bassett,
I am always open minded, because "many things still hold a mystery or two".
I did consider putting a fully automatic dish on the roof of my new van (see
www.jeal.com.au/boroma) but the extra cost was (in my opinion) not warranted
since we dont watch a lot of TV when touring. The irony is that we watch a
bit of TV when the weather is bad, and thats when the dish needs to be
relatively well alligned. I have a 90cm dish that I mount on the caravan
chassis or "A" frame. It gets easier to allign as I get more practice. I
once tried a 60cm dish and finished up giving it to a friend, but I must
admit that I was pretty green at the time. Interestingly, he gave it back to
me. Maybe if I tried it again now I would have more success. I just
purchased a Satlook Micro+ , might just go out and have a play ... ... ...
Regards Allan
