Will the Quest hook up to a laptop acting like an external gps antenna
that
can be used with mapsource or other computer based mapping software?
Just plugged my Quest in to check (I knew it worked with the 60cs). Yes, it
works with MapSource on a laptop. Shows elevation and provides with ability
to record tracks as well. I am using the USB cable that came with the unit
into the laptop's USB port.
Does mapsource have the ability to hook up an external antenna to a
computer
serial port and then track your movements without the use of a handheld
unit?
Doubtful since it asks for the device from a drop-down list if it cannot
auto-find and most likely the devices are Garmin. I will add the newer USB
capable Garmin units are temperamental through the serial port. I have a
converter that I used with an older eMap and it worked well with programs
such as MapSource and Microsoft's Streets and Trips on the laptop through
the USB port, but now I cannot use the same cable affair with Streets and
Trips. Seems Microsoft and Garmin are at odds in their support of USB
protocols. Just odd that the Quest will work through USB and not Microsoft
(unless you use their "compatible" USB GPS unit).
