Garmin, not content with going after the car navigation market, is now going
after the novice pilot market with the introduction of a new model aimed at
aviators.

The iQue 3600a is a PalmOS-based PDA that has been designed to sit on an
airplane's control yoke, and features a built-in basemap, terrain, obstacle
and Jeppesen databases.

In addition, the device features the automotive turn-by-turn navigation
capabilities and personal information management (PIM) applications of
Garmin's iQue PDA/GPS product line.

Currently the product is only supporting North/South America. With aviation
navaids, airports and airspace; navigation arc overlay with configurable
data fields; sectional chart-like topographic data; and U.S. obstacles like
towers The QueTerrain capability uses the topographic/obstacles database to
alert the pilot to potential terrain conflicts along the flight path using
pop-up windows. QueNav displays GPS-derived speed, altitude and guidance
features in an aircraft panel format.

The QueFlights tool keeps a record of flight time, mileage and start/end
point as a digital logbook and interfaces with Garmin's PC-based FlightBook
software.

The unit will cost $1099

??? I'm pretty sure that Garmin made aviation GPS's before they made any
other GPS units and most definitely before they produced any car navigation
units.

That's a rather odd way for them to put it given Garmin's long-standing

presence in the aviation market. As one example, Cessna has recently
started offering the 'all-glass' instrument panel using a Garmin G1000
as an optional upgrade in some of their planes:

And way back in the days of the old muxed single-channel Garmin GPS45
they were also selling handheld aviation models and therefore put the
artificial 99 knot speed limit on the non-aviation 45s so pilots
couldn't use those instead. Fortunately they abandoned that
marketing ploy many years ago.

Yeah, but not in a cool PDA, which costs about as much as an IFR-
certified unit. ;-)

The operative word in the OP is 'novice'. They will likely sell some. I
would like to have one myself, for the logbook capability and driving
directions. But there is no way I would ever pay $1100 for it. Come
down about $800 and I might consider it.

The operative word in the OP is 'novice'.

So how is this latest offering aimed any more at the 'novice' pilot
than lots of previous and other current Garmin aviation products
like the old GPS90 (similar design as the 45 with aviation database),
GPS96 (enhanced version of 76 series), IIIPilot (similar to III/III+),
96C (similar to 76C).

Garmin has long had a wide line of aviation GPS equipment ranging
from relatively inexpensive(for aviation) handhelds selling for much
less than the newly announced iQue3600a to full glass panel
installations selling for way more.

They will likely sell some.

I'm sure they will. I just don't see it an any new market entry by
Garmin when they've been in that market all along.

Don't confuse the real world with marketing hyperbole. Of course Garmin
has been selling aviation-oriented GPSrs for a long time. But this is
NEW!!! IMPROVED!!!! Or another way to get someone to buy your stuff.

I'm glad that this started such a lively discussion! Hey, I was just posting
an article that I hadn't seen before.
