Zip Codes? |
|
|
Will be delivering lost luggage. Looking for a unit which allows me to enter
zip code, then street address. I noticed the Tom Tom 700 does this but
their manual says zips are only available in UK and the Netherlands. I'm in
the U.S. The manual for the Garmin 2620 says it can be done but I was
looking for something newer like the 2720 or C330. Neither of these mention
zips in their manuals. Any help woulfd be appreciated. |

Yes, as of now, the TomTom only navigates to post codes in the UK...But
my fingers are crossed that we may get it here soon! Good luck finding
a good unit! |

I use Mapopolis running on a Palm T3 for this, connected to a Garmin
eTrex. I use the Palm for lots of other stuff, and already had it, and
already had the Garmin. Mapopolis is only $150, including a 1GB SD card.
There are lots of ways to get this done, but a Palm/basic GPS/Mapopolis
combo works for me. I can't help you at all with the high-end GPS units,
because I just don't see the need to spend that much money.

The Garmin 2610 can easily pull addresses without zipcodes, then can
set up an optimized route connecting them all without user
intervention needed.
I don't think you'd need to do a thing with zip codes. I don't need
them with my 2610. I think you could skip them altogether.

I would believe if you have a laptop or tablet pc for tracking
purpose, S&T 2005 should do the job of allowing you to enter address
(as pushpin) in zip code then address . After you have entered all
location on the map then you can do route planning. After entering
addresses, you may edit by deleting or adding more depending on your
need.
Before planning your route , you can download from Microsoft's site on
the updated construction detours as well.
You can import yours contacts from your outlook as well to plot your
pushpins of delivery locations .
Besides a laptop, you would need a gps (mouse, bt, cf...) and the cost
likely amouts to around $100-150.

Trucker Escort Problem |
|
|
My son escorts oversized and hazardous loads all over the country.
Just before starting each run he gets from Departments of
Transportation of the states they will cross the exact path they
*must* follow or face heavy fines. On a recent trip there were
something like 50 entries. I've listed the first 8 below.
Start at Exit 2 on I-90 in Idaho.
I-90 east to US287 in Montana.
287 north to hwy12.
12 east to US89.
89 south to to I-90.
90 east to 212.
212 east across Wyoming to 79 in South Dakota.
79 south to 34.
He would like to be able to enter or import such a route into his
laptop and use GPS to alert him audibly to upcoming turns as well as
being able to look up nearby restaurants and motels. I purchased
DeLorme Street Atlas 2006 for him but the software insists on doing
the routing itself and, of course, it never agrees with the
circuitous demands of the DOT's. By going back a few times using
"vias" and "avoids" you can (usually) force Delorme to go where you
want, but that is a long tedious process -- one he doesn't have time
or patience for.
Does anyone have any ideas on how this could be done with DeLorme or
with another piece of software or a different unit? |

I think the 'rubber band' function of MapSource (nRoute too?) would
make this a lot simpler. I'd enter the start & stop points of each
run, then simply click on the route created and drag the vertex to the
turn listed above. The route will recalc with the new vertex/turn/road
as part of the route. I just created the route above in a few minutes
here within MapSource; the route can be dumped into a GPS easily then
too, rather than using a laptop in the vehicle.
Pretty much the same as adding Vias in the DeLorme product, but lots
faster (in my experience, anyway).
(Assuming these routes were created in a computer in the first place,
maybe he can sweet-talk someone into providing the route in the
original format from whatever program the DOT uses.) |

Delorme routes can easily be made to go where you want. |
Simply use "vias" and insert the via just after each turn.
Very few of my routes do exactly what Delorme wants, they do
what I want. :)
Caution, if using a via on a divided highway, zoom in close
enough make sure the via is on the correct side. Street
Atlas will follow these vias even if they have to make a few
U-Turns. |
