There are two types: Type I and Type II (MicroDrive) Compact Flash. I
wonder which one will be better? I know Type I is faster but will it be
enough to increase the speed significantly?

Can anyone give me some comment?
Type II is a lot cheaper as far as I know.
Thanks.

No reason to use a faster card in a Garmin.

Type II are thicker, usually (solely?) for the HD type cards. Type I
is thinner; either will work in a Type II slot.

Flash memory is going to be a lot more robust than any tiny harddrive,
no matter how good they are.

Yes, that is why I choose flash.
But if anyone tried w/ both the Type I and Type II, please give some
comment about the performance of those.

Performance doesn't matter! Get yourself the cheapest Compact Flash Card
you can. Anything Faster isn't going to make any difference in the 2610.
I have a Sandisk 2 Gig I got for like $140 a while back. It's a Type I.
Your not likely to see a Type 2 for anything other then a MicroDrive which
you don't want to get anyway.

Do you know if it is possible to fit a 4Gb in?

And will it work? :)

What do you want to put on it? The entire US and Canada fits in 1.6Gb.

I think 2 Gig's is the Limit. Besides all of the US and Canada will fit on
1 2 Gig Card, and you still have the 128 Meg card if you need something
else, like say another country.

This should work:

"The new 4GB SanDisk CompactFlash card features a three-position
switch located in the left-hand area of the card so consumers can
switch between either a single 4GB (FAT32) volume or two separate 2GB
(FAT16) volumes. The switchable 4GB card ensures that users of cameras
with either file format will be able to use the new card. For maximum
customer satisfaction, SanDisk will initially ship the card in a FAT16
configuration – two FAT 16 partitions – eliminating the need for most
users to reposition the switch and reformat."

Don't know how much europe takes up. Why, you planning on driving all
of the US and Europe in one trip?

How do you select which of the 2 2gb partitions you want the GPS to use?
I don't see a way for the 2610 to select different drive letters on a
card. The external switch would have to select which partition to use,
and if that's the case, it would be just about the same as 2 separate
2gb cards.

Well, yes, of course. But the question was about fitting it all onto a
4GB card - which this one is. And if it doesn't work in the GPS as a
4GB, it should still usable in a GPS as two 2GB capacities.

If you had to 1) flip a card switch or 2) switch cards, you'd still
have to remove the card. This item might save you a hunt for the
second card. And it might also keep file-number-limitations at bay,
too.

(Before anyone blasts back thinking that I'm suggesting this card
should replace all other CF cards, I'm not. I just found it to be an
interesting possibility.)

Europe in full takes around the same space as the whole US.

No, I'm not planning a mammoth trip, it would just be a nice idea to load
all the maps I might ever need onto one card and forget about them.
However at the price they're quoting I don't think I'll bother ;-)
